How big is your belly?

August 14th, 2007

In a recent article posted on the main page of yahoo it talked about how the size of one’s stomach can really reveal the health risks that a person may have.

If the person has a hard big beer belly their chances of having some serious heart issue.  So now it’s even more important to lose your stomach not just because you want to look good but it can save your life.

Some strategies you can implement right now to help lose your belly (I have a little one too, so I will bite the bullet and take in my own advice) is the following:

-Drink water instead of juices and soda.

This is a great way to shave off a few calories right off the bat without a lot of work.

-Keep yourself active everywhere you go.

This basically means parking further away from the mall entrance, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, knocking out some pushups or squats during tv commercials.

Really get in as much working out as you possibly can.  I can understand how  a long day of work, having to take care of children can make you tired and not have time to spend 30 minutes everyday working out but think about how much time in between commercials you spend when watching tv or the little mini breaks in a day when you can do some walking to burn a few calories.

When it comes to weight loss, when it comes to losing that stomach, every little bit counts.

Weight Loss Starts in the AM

August 13th, 2007

This is going to be short and sweet but listen up because it’s important!   When you wake up in the morning what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

Is it the fact you’re late for work?

Don’t have time to eat?

Taking a shower ?

How tired you are?

If so, this is perfectly normal.  But what shouldn’t be normal is skipping out on breakfast like many of you probably do.  There’s no excuses for not having breakfast.  And once I tell you what skipping it does to your goal of losing weight, you’ll think twice.

Losing weight is difficult but one thing that makes it easy is when you’re able to have a high metabolism. Skipping breakfast not only makes you overeat in the meals to follow but it will also leave you sluggish and slow your metabolism down.

The body needs food to produce energy to function correctly.  If you’re not eating breakfast it will find a way to get energy.  That energy that you neglected to provide it will come from your muscles.  This basically means you’re losing muscle.  Losing muscle slows down your metabolism which means you burn less calories throughout the day.

Do yourself a favor and make sure you have breakfast.  And when it doubt have yourself a protein shake which will give you a nice balance of carbs and protein.  One I recommend highly which is great tasting as well is called Varsity.

Stick it to Michael Moore

August 7th, 2007

This is not a message that’s dealing with trying to take Michael Moore down or to disrespect him in anyway.  Michael Moore is actually one of my favorite directors and for one reason only.  He speaks his mind and takes risk doing so.

Be that as it may, I think that Michael Moore can have an even bigger impact if he takes on this incredible challenge that’s been put forward by my mentors Ryan Lee and Jim Labadie.

For more details about it be sure to visit:

Back to School Diet

August 7th, 2007

With the summer wrapping up it can only mean one thing, school is about to open up again.  If you have children this means that you’ll be back to pack up school lunches and snacks very soon.

Be careful though on what you are putting in their lunch boxes because unfortunately parents are really to blame for the rate at which obesity is growing in children today.  Children for the most part follow the directions of their parents and if you continue to give them foods that are high in sugar such as cupcakes and cookies chances are they will become a statistic in no time.

The reason I am writing this is because many parents simply don’t understand the impact that obesity can play on their child.  The embarassing moments from school bullies to the tons of health risks they will be faced with in the future, it’s time to take a stand and make a change.

In order for our children to be the future of this world they must be around to live it.  If we continue to feed them junk, it’s sad to say it but chances are you as parents will out-live your own kids.

Take a stand today and revamp your child’s eating with the back to school diet that I’ve put together here:

Instead of give them cupcakes or cookies give them unsalted peanuts, low-fat yogurts, and almonds.

Instead of the kool-aid and other fruit juices opt for the small water bottles which might even save you a few bucks when it comes to shopping.

Also encourage your kids to be active in the classroom and out the classroom.  Active in the classroom through interaction and participation but outside the classroom encourage them to play sports, and be physical.  This will help them from gaining weight and ultimately will at least be the start of ending this fight against childhood obesity.

Faith Based Weight Loss

August 7th, 2007

One of the most popular things going on in the world of weight loss is something called faith based weight loss.   This is something I saw a while back while flipping the channels on my television.  Now many are asking whether this is true or not.

First let me explain what faith based weight loss is really about before going into my opinion on it’s effectiveness.  In short, faith based weight loss deals with lessons of the Bible geared towards reducing waistlines and promoting weight loss.

Now many will  wonder what the heck does weight loss and religion have in common.  Is this all real or simply another person trying to make a buck on some weight loss myths.

Some people have come forward and said that by following a program called Weigh Down they were able to lose weight.  Now I wrote an e-book that talked about how believing in yourself and visualizing your weight loss success can help you lose weight, but this Weigh Down method takes this to a whole different level.

Now my opinion should not be taken to the heart but if this weight loss program suggest that there’s no work involved in losing weight I will have to strongly disagree with it.  Weight loss requires work, there’s no way around it.  Can lessons in the Bible help with weight loss?  That remains to be seen in my book but again approach each weight loss program with caution even if it’s faith-based.

Barry Bonds Weight Loss Lesson

August 7th, 2007

Yeah I know, what the heck can Barry Bonds teach you about losing weight right.  Remove your opinion on whether he’s guilty of taking performance enhancing drugs or not and listen up on how Barry Bonds chase to be baseball’s homerun king can help you lose weight.

Baseball is a game that focuses a lot on numbers and the next big number now is 756.  This is the number of home-runs Barry Bonds will have after hitting his next homerun.

Now what does this have to do with you?  Athletes are always working to break records believe it or not and when it comes to losing weight you too should be looking to achieve personal records as well.  Whether it’s completing one more rep, or perhaps you lifting a heavier weight you need to push yourself to the max if you’re going to achieve your personal best.

Losing weight is difficult as is chasing one of baseball’s long and prestigious records but like Barry Bonds you need to strive for achieve your personal best in order to create the body of your dreams.

The next time you enter the gym take notes of the weights you lift and how many reps you’re able to do.  And then next time go for a personal record and beat your previous numbers.  Not only will you feel good about the progress but you’ll also be happy with the image you see in the mirror as well.

Work hard and most importantly play ball! [I know it’s a corny statement, forgive me ]

Healthy Eating Your Way to 6 pack abs

August 7th, 2007

In a call today I was asked about what are the best supplements to take for building muscle, and for getting rid of fat.  What people tend to forget though is that a lot of the things supplements provide are actually nutrients you can find if you focus on healthy eating.

Healthy eating in a nutshell deals with eating foods that provide nutrients your body need to function properly.  This includes your vitamins, protein, creatine, calcium and all sorts of amino acids, the list goes on and on.

But what I want people to not forget about when it comes to getting in shape is the fact that healthy eating is really the key.  Eating 5-6 times a day, have 20-30% of your calories come from protein, snacking on low calorie foods such as almonds or fat-free yogurt is definitely a great way to go to get your coveted 6 pack abs.

The next time you want to know what supplements to take shift your focus on what ways you could improve your eating so that you’re eating healthy.

Kiss All Sodas Goodbye

August 6th, 2007

I am back from my vacation in Baltimore and I had a great time, stay tuned for pictures but what I want to quickly share with you today is an important message that I know I’ve overlooked for many years until a research study came out about a few weeks ago.

Many people when they go out to eat will order diet sodas because it’s got zero calories compared to the regular soda.  I’m guilty as charged when it comes to this.  Until reading an article that came out about a few weeks ago I thought nothing of drinking diet soft drinks.

I was under the assumption that hey it’s zero calories so it won’t hurt me.  But apparently I was wrong.  In a case study they showed that those who drank more than one diet soda a day had the same risks of heart diseases as those who drink the normal sugary soft sodas out there.

I strongly suggest a buyer’s beware when it comes to drinking soda period.  Stick to water, green tea and stay away from soft drinks like juices or sodas.  If you really want something with flavor you can get a healthy smoothie made for you as well.

But again you’ve been warned, Diet soda really isn’t any better than original soda.  Now that they both have pretty much the same risk of heart diseases because of it’s sugar content perhaps for the sake of long-living go with water.

P.S.- Tomorrow I’ll be posting a picture of yours truly attempting to play golf. Please don’t be harsh on the my form when you see it. =)

The Best Ways to Burn Belly Fat

July 30th, 2007

This week I wanted to talk about something that we ALL hate.  But instead of hearing it from me, I wanted you to learn about it from a fitness guru who obviously comes with a long record of kicking belly fat to the curb.  So enjoy the great read.

Best Ways to Burn Belly Fat

I often get asked, “What’s the best way to burn fat and lose my belly?” People want to know if aerobics is better than strength training, or if traditional cardio exercise is better than intervals.

Well, to say I’ve done them all would be an understatement.

With over 15 years experience helping others, training myself, training for sports, spending countless hours in the gym, AND actually conducting laboratory research studies on different exercise methods, I’m pretty confident in knowing what works and what does not.

But first of all, I want to frame my responses. I’m going to talk about what works for people that have a limited amount of time to exercise, mostly because I expect your readers don’t have 90 minutes per day to devote to a workout, unlike the typical audience of a fitness magazine.

That’s why there is a huge disconnect between some of the information found in magazines and the ability of the reader to apply it to their lives.

We just don’t have 6-8 hours per week for exercise, nor do we need it. If you’re a triathlete, you might need that, but not someone that just wants to lose fat and gain muscle.

Having said all that, the bottom line for getting a better body is…

Use bodyweight exercises to warm-up, strength training supersets to build muscle, and then finish your workout with interval training to burn fat in a short amount of time. I’ve structured my system so that you are in and out of the gym in 45 minutes, three times per week.

You’ll do 5 minutes of bodyweight exercises to warm-up. This is a much more efficient approach than spending 5 minutes walking on a treadmill, which really doesn’t prepare you for anything except more walking on a treadmill.

Then we move into the strength training supersets, where we use two exercises performed back to back with minimum rest between each. This cuts our workout time, while still giving us maximum results. We only need 20 minutes for this, and we’ll use basic exercises, and sometimes even more bodyweight exercises, depending on the client’s goal for muscle building.

And finally, we’ll do 18 minutes of interval training. A warm-up, followed by six short intervals at the appropriate fitness level for the client, interspersed with short periods of low-intensity recovery. Finish with a cool-down. And that’s the workout. Again, about 45 minutes total.

Compare that to what most people do, which is run, jog, cycle or use the cardio machines for 45 minutes straight. Sure, that will burn calories, but it doesn’t build a better body.

In fact, there are a few “dark sides” to long slow cardio, including less-than-optimal results, the potential for overuse injuries, and it is an inefficient form of exercise. If you only have 30-45 minutes for your workout and you spend it all on a cardio machine, when are you going to train the rest of your muscles and sculpt a better body?

So the best way to burn belly fat is with a combination of strength training and interval training. It’s fast, it works, and it’s fun!

Mind Over Matter

Mind Over Matter

What does that mean to you?

To me it means being able to do anything that I put my mind to no matter how hard it can be.  I personally like to think that there’s nothing I can’t do and I honestly can’t seem to figure out why people let fear stop them dead in the tracks from doing what it is they want.

Now I know someone who knows me well will say, hey Geo you let fear stop you from going on rollercoasters.  My answer to that is I never wanted to ride rollercoasters to begin with.

But you, the person who wants to look good and feel great, you want those things but yet you let feelings of discomfort and fear keep you from accomplishing your dreams.  Dreams that you rightfully deserve to turn into realities.

Honestly that’s why I wrote Mind Over Matter folks.  Sure it’s great to be a published writer, sure it’s great to make a few bucks here and there but honestly if I could bury one message home it would be to dream and get the hell out the way.  Don’t let fear step in between you and your goals.

Mind Over Matter is the guide you need to push you over the fears and mental barriers that’s stopped you in the past from losing weight.  This time around add a sidekick to your battle to lose weight and believe me your life will change beyond belief.

You can get access to my e-book by going to

http://www.fitness-sucess.com

There are less than 24 hours left before this e-book is taken off the market.  When will it be back? Honestly the answer might be never, so take action now and change your life for the good.
